2. Put those muscles to use A sedentary work lifestyle causes sluggishness, body aches and turns the mood sour. Make sure to stretch your arms every now and then, flex your fingers if you’ve been typing for a while, and get up and move around. 3. Cultivate good food habits Don’t get so caught up in work that you ignore your stomach’s protests. Postponing lunch or doing away with tea breaks is counterproductive as lack of fuel only hastens the onslaught of natural fatigue. Try to avoid greasy and fattening food as it induces lethargy. Instead, opt for healthier alternatives filled with vegetables and fruits. Drinking lots of water is also crucial for staying sharp and focused.
4. Mingle with your peers One of the perks of office life is the work culture. Being surrounded by interesting, talented and diverse types of people gives you the chance to form healthy interpersonal relationships. Don’t squander the opportunity by staying cooped up within your cubicle. Socialising with co-workers adds those touches of levity to work. A good conversation is highly energising and helps employees feel less isolated.
5. Personalise your space Since you’ll be spending a major chunk of each day at your workstation, it has to be comfortable and stimulating. Have photos of loved ones on your desk to help power through cranky days, tack up inspirational quotes to remind yourself that hard work takes time but eventually pays off, keep little things like a Rubik’s Cube or dog-eared comic book on hand to stave away boredom during those slow periods.
These are just a few tried-and-tested methods to achieve optimal efficiency. By taking small breaks you’re basically rewarding yourself for the tasks achieved thus far and that’s perfectly reasonable. So, go on. Take a walk, drink some coffee and talk to your colleagues about the new Avengers movie. The work can wait.
